After a number of false starts, I've finally got my hands on a decent copy of Ringleader of the Tormentors, and it's a winner. Produced by Tony Visconti, so I assume it was he who cheekily stuck the intro to T.Rex's Get It On (which he also produced, of course) on the start of In The Future When All's Well.
Coincidentally I downloaded the best of T.Rex a couple of days ago and listened accidentally to the two tracks almost back to back on the MP3 player. I thought it was playing the same track again!
Have a listen and compare the two:
Morrissey - In The Future When All's Well [mp3]
T.Rex - Get it On (Bang a Gong) [mp3]
The Morrissey vibe is in full force throughout the album, and the whole thing benefits from Visconti's crystal clear production and added strings and other instrumentation.
Another track with an obvious Visconti/Bowie influence is torch song To Me You Are a Work of Art, which has a Carlos Alomar-like soaring guitar wail fading in and out of the background.
Morrissey - To Me You Are A Work of Art [mp3]
Finally, some classic Morrissey themes reappear in the track The Youngest Was the Most Loved - romantic gangsters and misunderstood psychopaths, basically!

Tony Visconti has provided a fascinating insight into the production process on his blog, which you can read here.

His last album was horrible ...this new one is an upgrade for sure. Oh, and Morrissey doesn't live in America. He lives in LA, and we aren't exactly your all-American city!
